protected

The Catfish grows quite large reaching upto 7kg but is usually found below 2kg, native to the River Murray but can be found in the Gulf catchment. Builds large nests out of gravel when breeding and are generally bottom dwellers in larger pools. Adults eat shrimps, yabbies and aquatic and terestrial invertebrates such as worms. Four pairs of barbels around its mouth are used to locate prey, giving it an unusual appearance and hence the name 'Catfish'.
